How does the Heart work?

The heart is a muscular organ that acts as a pump to send blood throughout the body. It has four chambers: two atria (upper) and two ventricles (lower).
Blood flows as follows:

  1. Blood inflow: Oxygen-depleted blood enters the right atrium from the body through the main veins.
  2. Passage to the lungs: The right atrium contracts and pushes blood into the right ventricle, which pumps it to the lungs to recharge with oxygen.
  3. Return to the heart: Oxygenated blood returns to the heart, entering the left atrium.
  4. Distribution: The left atrium passes blood to the left ventricle, which pumps it to the rest of the body through the main artery, the aorta.

 

This process maintains a constant flow of blood, ensuring that the organs receive oxygen and nutrients, and eliminating wastes from the body.

What are Congenital Heart Diseases?

Congenital heart defects are defects of the heart that are present from birth. These defects can affect the structure of the heart, valves, or blood vessels, making it difficult for blood to flow normally.
The most common types of congenital heart disease include:

  1. Defects in the walls of the heart: such as holes between the chambers of the heart (e.g., interatrial or interventricular septum ).
  2. Valve problems: Such as valves that do not open or close properly, affecting blood flow.
  3. Abnormal blood vessels: Such as an abnormal connection between major blood vessels or problems in the structure of the aorta. blood vessels or problems in the structure of the aorta.

These conditions can range from mild, where symptoms are not serious, to more severe, which can be life-threatening if left untreated. The exact cause is not always known, but may be related to genetic or environmental factors during pregnancy.
