Treatments

Treatments for congenital heart disease depend
on the severity of the defect, and may include:

Medications:

To control heart function, blood pressure and prevent blood clots.

Cardiac catheterization:

To treat obstructions or minor defects and valvuloplasty to expand narrowed valves.

Surgery:

To correct structural defects such as holes in the heart or narrowing of vessels, or to perform repairs in more complex conditions such as tetralogy of Fallot or transposition of great vessels.

Continuous monitoring:

Regular monitoring with echocardiograms and other tests to ensure long-term health.
