Many congenital heart diseases affect blood flow, which can cause not enough oxygen to reach the body's organs and tissues. This can cause fatigue, shortness of breath, bluish skin (cyanosis) and other symptoms of circulatory failure.
Children with congenital heart disease may experience delays in growth and physical development because their bodies do not receive adequate oxygen and nutrients. This can affect both their growth and their ability to perform everyday activities such as playing or walking.
Because the heart is not pumping blood efficiently, children may feel more tired, even with mild physical activities. This can limit their ability to play, go to school or participate in sports.
Some heart defects may increase the risk of lung infections or respiratory complications because the blood reaching the lungs is not adequately oxygenated. This can cause shortness of breath and increased susceptibility to lung disease.
Anxiety and stress are common in children living with congenital heart disease, especially if they require multiple medical procedures, surgery or hospital visits. In addition, the impact of the disease on their daily lives can lead to feelings of insecurity and frustration.
Some children with congenital heart disease may develop long-term heart problems, such as heart failure or arrhythmias. These problems may require ongoing treatment as they grow older.
